A man has been cycling around the Los Angeles area slashing people with various sharp objects from the seat of his bike. Over the last month, there have been six slashing incidents by the same offender. All of the victims have sustained serious, but non-threatening, injuries – some of whom have been hospitalized.
The safety of all cyclists and pedestrians should be the most important factor in public transportation. The old saying rings true: if you see something, say something. If you see someone conducting unsafe behavior, or criminal behavior in this case, on a bicycle in the Los Angeles or Woodland Hills area, call local authorities immediately. If it is safe to do so, try and get any pictures or key features written down about the suspect.
Onlookers or witnesses of the slasher said that there seems to be no rhyme or reason to his attacks, and both women and men have been slashed. The only common denominator in his strikes are that they have all been attacks to the face. One woman suffered superficial lacerations to her face in the Lynwood area.
This type of attack is more than a hit-and-run incident, and will most likely be charged as assault. Assault in California is outlined as:
- “The defendant did something that was likely to result in the use of force against someone else
- The defendant did so willfully
- The defendant was aware of facts that would lead a reasonable person to believe that this act would directly and probably result in force being applied to the other person
- When the defendant acted, s/he had the ability to apply force to the other person.”
If you see or hear any information about the cycling slasher in the Los Angeles area, please call local authorities as soon as possible. Be sure to stay aware of your surroundings, and always take note if you are being followed by someone – whether on foot or bicycle.
